It is easy. Bring your original valid passport, copies of the photo page and valid China visa page. (There's no nearby photocopier so don't forget these). Fill up an application form provided by the Consulate for free.
It takes at least 4 weeks to process (can take 2 to 3 months sometimes). Ideally, apply 8 months prior to passport expiry date.
To claim your new passport, you need to bring your current passport AND claim stub. Double check visa release time, to avoid wasting time.
You can use your current passport while the new one is being processed.
